Addiction, Mental Health & Unhealthy Coping Patterns: Podcast

I was recently invited to speak on a podcast about addiction, mental health and unhealthy coping patterns, exploring what can sit underneath behaviours that may feel difficult to control or change.

In the conversation, we discuss addiction and the different ways people can cope with difficult emotions, stress, loneliness, anxiety and overwhelm. We explore why people may turn to behaviours such as alcohol, gambling, social media, work or other compulsive behaviours to manage how they feel, and why understanding the function of a behaviour can be an important part of creating lasting change.

We also talk about the connection between mental health and addictive behaviours, the impact of shame and self-esteem, and how therapy can help people understand their patterns and develop healthier ways of coping.

As a psychotherapist in Dubai, I work with adolescents and adults experiencing difficulties including addiction, ADHD, trauma, perfectionism, anxiety and self-esteem. My approach focuses on understanding the underlying factors contributing to a person's difficulties, rather than simply focusing on the behaviour itself.
